L’Antica Cantina

The Cooperative Society of San Severo was born in 1933. In that year 30 wine growers, thanks to the committment of one of the most important farmer in the city, Mr Antonio La Monaca, enjoyed to create one of the most ancient cellar in Apulia.

The cellar develops on 2 production sites which extend for more than 18.000 square meters. It is equipped for the reception the processing and the marketing of 18 million kg of grapes. 4 million of these grapes are D.O.P. and 4 million are I.G.P.

The cellar produces and commercializes white, rose and red D.O.P. San Severo wine; I.G.P. wines and among them noteworthy are Nero di Troia and Bombino Bianco and other different wines labelled “ L’Antica Cantina” .

The cellar obtained the Quality System Certification UNI EN ISO 9001: 2008 which nowadays has completed a committment to quality.

The city of San Severo lies in the middle of the High Tableland between the hills of the Daunia Pre-Apennines and the Gargano. An intense prehistoric frequentation that refers mainly to the Neolithic Age is documented by traces of villages found in the southern suburbs of San Severo.

In the most ancient documents concerning San Severo ( the first one dates back to 1116 d.C.) “ castrum Sancti Severi” and “ castellum Sancti Severini” are quoted. The Emperor Federico II ordered the construction of the “ palatium Bello Videre apud Sanctum Severum “ and soon after because of a rebellion in 1230 he ordered the destruction of the town walls that corresponded to the actual “ internal circle” and to fill up the ditch: in this way he wanted to punish and mortify the citizens who allied with the Benedictine Fathers against him. Furthermore the Emperor entrusted San Severo to the Templars. It is likely that this period coincides with the first cultivation of the White Bombino vine ( the basic D.O.P. San Severo vine) which was brought over by the Templars coming back from the Holy Land.

With the coming of the Angevin rule the town walls were rebuilt with a wider perimeter corresponding to the actual “ external circle”. After the terrible earthquake in 1627 the town map changed and, especially in the eighteenth century, many baroque buildings and churches were built; today they represent the main attraction of the city of San Severo.
